Climate Change, Resilience & Sustainability

The International Housing Association (IHA) is committed to advancing housing globally by promoting policies on climate change, resilience, and sustainability, while maintaining affordability and improving the built environment. A full Statement of Intent was confirmed by members on March 2, 2024.

Member Initiatives

Australia – HIA GreenSmart
Since 1999, this program has provided training on sustainable building practices, certified homes and projects, and offered resources, an online magazine, and awards.

Europe – Build Europe’s Green Deal & Renovation Wave
A package of 21 proposals from major developers promoting carbon neutrality through large-scale housing renovation, digital tools, training programs, and financial support.

Canada – CHBA Net Zero Energy Labelling Program
Recognizes Net Zero and Net Zero Ready homes, supports national labeling systems (like R-2000 and ENERGY STAR), and balances affordability with energy performance goals. Over 1 million homes have been labeled using the EnerGuide system.

USA – National Green Building Standard (NGBS)
The first ANSI-approved residential green standard, providing flexible above-code design across six areas (lot design, resources, water, energy, indoor quality, and operations). It offers Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald certifications, with over 200,000 units certified.
